Which are the current marine protected areas of Malta?

“Malta has, to date, designated two marine protected areas under the Environment Protection Act.

The obligation of setting up such areas arises from a number of international, regional and national legislation and policies. The first marine protected area declared under the Environment Protection Act was that between Rdum Majjiesa and Ras ir-Raħeb, in 2005.

It lies on the northwest coast of mainland Malta. This area forms part of the EU Natura 2000 Network of protected areas. The second one, designated in 2007, includes the marine area in the limits of Dwejra, west Gozo. A management framework and an action plan for these two areas, respectively, have been approved. Though Marine Protected Areas are still limited in extent, one should note that a considerable amount of work has been carried out.

Among these, a number of studies carried out in recent years have paved the way to select potential Marine Protected Areas. One can here mention a survey carried out in 2002, with the aim to map and to determine the extent and the status of the marine habitat type dominated by Posidonia oceanica meadows (Common Name: Neptune Grass; Maltese name: Alka). A more recent exercise entailed a survey of the mediolittoral algal communities along the coastline of the Maltese archipelago.
