India: HC directive to govt on compensation to fishermen

“The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to consider and pass appropriate orders on the Fisheries Commissioner’s recommendations over paying compensation to fishermen, restrained from fishing for 15 days during launch of rockets from Sriharikota launch pad.

In their order on a petition filed by South Indian Fishermen’s Federation, a Division Bench comprising Justices Elipe Dharma Rao and K K Sasidharan noted a submission by the special government pleader that the commissioner had already recommended this case on June 26, 2009 for compensation.

“In such circumstances we are of the view that appropriate directions should be issued to the state government to consider the proposal made by the Commissioner of Fisheries as per his proceedings of June 26, 2009,” the Bench said, directing that the compensation be paid within six weeks from receipt of of the court order.”
