Workshop on Conservation, Fisheries Management Practices and MPA Implementation Strategies in the Caribbean (Abril 23-26, Colombia)

MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

CLME Regional Workshop on Conservation, Fisheries Management Practices and MPA Implementation Strategies in the Caribbean – San Andres, Colombia April 23-26, 2012

The UNDP/UNESCO/IOCARIBE GEF Caribbean Large Marine Ecosystem (CLME) Project aims to promote the sustainable management of the shared living marine resources of the Caribbean and adjacent marine areas through an ecosystem-based management (EBM) approach and the principles of good governance.  The CLME Reef Fisheries and Biodiversity Pilot Project under the implementation of UNEP’s Caribbean Environment Programme promotes the EBM approach for the conservation and effective management of coral reef ecosystems and their associated resources in order to maintain their functional and structural integrity and biodiversity, and to ensure economic and social benefits for local communities and the region as a whole.

The following are the Pilot Project target sites which have been implementing various activities to improve management and governance of the Reef Fisheries and Biodiversity within their areas :

·         Sea Flower Biosphere Reserve, San Andres Archipelago (Colombia)

·         Pedro Bank (Jamaica)

·         Montecristi National Park (Dominican Republic) and adjacent areas in Haiti

In order to facilitate networking, the transfer of better practices, and dissemination of lessons learnt among the three target sites, UNEP-CEP in collaboration with CORALINA, the project’s local partner, is convening the above-mentioned event.

The workshop will be held in San Andres, Colombia at the site of one of UNEP-CEP’s CLME Pilot sub-projects – the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, and will be held on April 23-26, 2012.  For further details, please see the CLME Fact Sheet attached, or contact Alessandra Vanzella-Khouri (avk@cep.unep.org) or Karen McDonald Gayle (mcdgayle@gmail.com).
