MEPs urged to take fisheries reforms seriously – Xavier Pastor

logo-epolitix“Europe is facing one of the most serious economic crises of this generation and, as elected representatives of European citizens, members of parliament must, now more than ever before, ensure that public money is spent efficiently, effectively and for the public good.

In the case of fisheries subsidies, spending has actually worsened the over-exploitation of marine resources by allowing member states to subsidise vessel modernisation, allowing boats to fish longer, harder and farther away than would otherwise be possible. The parliament’s fisheries committee is days away from a critical vote on the European maritime and fisheries fund (EMFF), which will define how aid is granted to Europe’s fishing sector for the next seven years.”
