“Every year an estimated 300,000 seabirds – including 100,000 of one of the world’s largest flying birds, the albatross – are accidentally killed by the fishing industry. But a British company, set up by conservationists to find a way to reduce this annual slaughter, believes it has finally found a solution after seven years of work. Trials of the Hookpod, which will be reported in a scientific journal in the coming weeks, found that it was just as effective at catching fish as an ordinary hook, but almost guaranteed that no seabirds would be killed.”
